The Best Cities for Ballroom Dance
There are ballroom dancing studios in every city, in every state in the U.S. However, just like any other recreational sport or hobby, there are places known for the activity. If you are a ballroom dancer, especially a dancer that competes, check out these four cities that are bringing a lot to the ballroom dancing world. If you’re planning some traveling – you might even want to schedule a pit stop!
USA Dance is a member of the United States Olympic Committee and International DanceSport Federation. They host a variety of ballroom dance competitions across the country every year. Dancers that set their sights on competing in the national championship must attend at least one of the twelve or more qualifying conferences. If they are good enough and make it past that round, they go on to compete in – you guessed it, Baltimore. Each year Nationals are held at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel in Maryland where dancers compete at junior through adult levels in all different styles.
Believe it or not, this is where the world’s largest ballroom dance competition is held. Not the country’s largest, but the world’s. Annually, thousands of hopeful dancers come to Columbus to show off their skills in American Smooth, American Rhythm, International Standard or International Latin ballroom dancing. Judges from around the globe come together to rank and crown the winning couple. If you can’t make it to Columbus this year, the competition is always televised on PBS titled, “America’s Ballroom Challenge.”
Los Angeles, California
LA is the home to the Ballroom Dance Academy, one of the biggest ballroom programs in the United States. The academy offers lessons for every skill level including children who are new to the dance world, couples looking to learn a dance or two for their wedding, and competitive dancers looking to develop their talent into a long-term career. Los Angeles is also the hub of another 150 dance schools specializing in every type of dance imaginable, available via group classes or private sessions.
Salt Lake City, Utah
For young dancers just graduating high school and looking to make ballroom dancing a professional career, Brigham Young University (BYU) in Utah offers a world-renowned program. The BYU Ballroom Dance Company has won the United States National Formation Dance Championship every year since 1982. Every year! Whether young dancers are looking to continue to dance or eventually teach dance, this program will surround them with top industry professionals. The university boasts the largest collegiate ballroom dance program in the world and they offer over a dozen different dance classes each semester.
These four ballroom dancing cities wouldn’t make for a bad road trip especially during a big competition. In fact, aspiring dancers might want to consider visiting or moving to one of these cities to help improve their skills and develop their careers. From college in Utah to dance championships in Maryland – there’s a place for every dancer no matter age, interest or skill.
